US State Car Sales Tax Calculator FAQ

What state has the highest car sales tax?
Combined state plus average local rates put Louisiana, Tennessee and Arkansas near the top, often above 9% on vehicles.
Which states have no sales tax on cars?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon levy no state sales tax on vehicles, though local fees and DMV charges still apply.
Is the trade-in deduction always allowed?
No. Some states tax the full sale price regardless of trade-in. The calculator allows you to set trade-in to zero in those cases.
Does it include title and registration fees?
It adds an approximate flat title fee per state. Annual registration, plate and emissions fees vary widely and are not included.
Is Georgia's TAVT included?
Georgia abolished annual ad valorem tax in favor of a 7% Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) at registration. Use the dedicated Georgia TAVT calculator for that — this state picker flags it instead of double-counting.
