Notes

• TAVT applies to vehicles titled in Georgia after March 1, 2013 — replaces the old annual ad valorem ('birthday tax'). • The standard rate is 7%. Family transfers between immediate relatives where TAVT was already paid drop to 0.5%. • New residents who move to Georgia pay a reduced flat 3% TAVT when titling a vehicle previously registered in another state — there is no credit for tax paid elsewhere. • Georgia DOR uses the HIGHER of bill-of-sale price or DOR Fair Market Value for most transactions. • A flat $18 title fee is added to TAVT.

This is a planning estimate. Verify the FMV on the Georgia DOR tag tool before titling. The calculation runs locally in your browser.

Georgia TAVT Calculator FAQ

What is Georgia TAVT?
TAVT (Title Ad Valorem Tax) is a one-time 7% tax paid when a vehicle is titled in Georgia. It replaced the old annual ad valorem ('birthday tax') for vehicles titled after March 1, 2013.
Is TAVT 7% on the sale price or FMV?
On the higher of bill-of-sale price or DOR Fair Market Value. The calculator uses max(FMV, price) by default — toggle off if your county allows the lower bill-of-sale figure.
Are family transfers really 0.5%?
Yes — when both parties have already paid TAVT once on the vehicle and meet the immediate-family relationship rule, the rate drops to 0.5%.
What about the $18 title fee?
Yes, $18 is added on top of TAVT for the new title certificate. Tag fees and any local fees are separate.
What do new residents pay when moving to Georgia?
New residents pay a reduced flat 3% TAVT on the fair market value when titling a vehicle previously registered in another state. Georgia does not give credit for sales tax or ad valorem tax paid in your former state.
