Compress PDF
Shrink a PDF to a smaller file size directly in your browser — pick a compression level and download the reduced PDF locally.
About the Compress PDF
Handytool's Compress PDF tool shrinks a PDF to a smaller file size so you can email it, upload it, or store it without hitting size limits. Choose Light, Medium, or Strong compression to trade a little visual quality for a lot of space savings. Everything runs in your browser — your PDF is never uploaded, so even confidential contracts, invoices, and scans stay on your device.
Compress PDF features
- 01
Three clear presets
Light keeps the most detail for printing, Medium is a sensible default for sharing, and Strong is for when you need to squeeze a PDF under an email or upload limit.
- 02
Browser-only and private
Your PDF is read, compressed, and saved entirely on your device. Nothing is uploaded to a server, queued, or stored — perfect for contracts, receipts, medical records, and scans.
- 03
Works on any PDF
Scans, photo-heavy reports, or multi-hundred page documents — Compress PDF re-renders every page so you always get a consistent, smaller output file.
Compress PDF FAQ
- How much smaller can Compress PDF make my file?
- It depends on the original. Photo-heavy PDFs and high-resolution scans often shrink by 60–90% on the Strong preset. Text-only PDFs that are already small may shrink less, since there is less to compress.
- Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
- No. The compressor runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your PDF is never uploaded, stored, or sent to a remote server.
- Will compressing lose quality?
- Some visible quality loss is unavoidable with lossy compression. Light keeps photos and text crisp for print, Medium is near-indistinguishable for on-screen use, and Strong is optimized for size rather than fidelity.
- Why is text no longer selectable after compression?
- Compress PDF re-renders each page as an image and rebuilds the PDF from those images. This is how it achieves strong size reductions, but the trade-off is that text becomes a picture instead of selectable characters.
- Does Compress PDF work on Mac, Windows, and mobile?
- Yes. It works in any modern browser on macOS, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, iPhone, and Android. Larger PDFs may take a few seconds longer on mobile hardware.
- Is there a file size limit?
- There is no server limit because nothing is uploaded. The practical ceiling is your device's RAM — most phones handle 100+ page PDFs, and desktops can compress documents of several hundred MB.
