Notes

• TAVT applies to vehicles titled in Georgia after March 1, 2013 — replaces the old annual ad valorem ('birthday tax'). • The standard rate is 7%. Family transfers between immediate relatives where TAVT was already paid drop to 0.5%. • Georgia DOR uses the HIGHER of bill-of-sale price or DOR Fair Market Value for most transactions. • A flat $18 title fee is added to TAVT. • Out-of-state buyers get credit for sales tax paid in another state, capped at the Georgia TAVT amount.

This is a planning estimate. Verify the FMV on the Georgia DOR tag tool before titling. The calculation runs locally in your browser.

What is Georgia TAVT?
TAVT (Title Ad Valorem Tax) is a one-time 7% tax paid when a vehicle is titled in Georgia. It replaced the old annual ad valorem ('birthday tax') for vehicles titled after March 1, 2013.
Is TAVT 7% on the sale price or FMV?
On the higher of bill-of-sale price or DOR Fair Market Value. The calculator uses max(FMV, price) by default — toggle off if your county allows the lower bill-of-sale figure.
Are family transfers really 0.5%?
Yes — when both parties have already paid TAVT once on the vehicle and meet the immediate-family relationship rule, the rate drops to 0.5%.
What about the $18 title fee?
Yes, $18 is added on top of TAVT for the new title certificate. Tag fees and any local fees are separate.
Do I get credit for sales tax I paid in another state?
If you titled and paid tax in another state on the same vehicle, Georgia credits the lesser of TAVT due and tax already paid. Use the out-of-state scenario to model this.
