Why HEVC Videos Don't Play Everywhere
Since iOS 11, iPhones record in HEVC (H.265) by default. GoPro cameras, DJI drones, and many Samsung phones do the same. HEVC is an efficient codec — files are roughly half the size of equivalent H.264 footage at the same quality — but efficiency came at a cost: widespread support took years to arrive, and gaps still exist today.
Windows needs a paid HEVC Video Extensions add-on from the Microsoft Store to play these files. Many web-based video players, PowerPoint, and older video editors outright refuse them. Upload an HEVC clip to some platforms and the upload silently fails or produces garbled playback. Converting to H.264 MP4 eliminates all of these problems in one step. H.264 is the global standard codec — every device, every player, every social network accepts it without any additional setup.
How to Convert HEVC to MP4
Works with .mov, .mp4, .hevc, and .m4v files from iPhones, GoPros, and drones.
- 01
Open your HEVC file
Drag your HEVC video onto the upload area or click Choose file. The file loads locally — it is not uploaded to any server.
- 02
Adjust the quality slider
The default setting gives a good balance between file size and clarity. Raise it to 85–95 for maximum fidelity on GoPro or drone footage; lower it for smaller files when sharpness is less critical.
- 03
Click Convert
FFmpeg WebAssembly re-encodes the H.265 stream to H.264 and packages it in an MP4 container. A progress bar shows the status.
- 04
Download the MP4
When conversion finishes, click Download. The resulting MP4 file plays on any device, in any editor, and uploads to any social platform.
What You Can Do With the Converted MP4
- 01Upload to YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, and Facebook
- 02Import into Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, and iMovie
- 03Play in Windows Media Player and the default Photos app without extra codecs
- 04Share with colleagues on Windows or Android without playback errors
- 05Embed in PowerPoint, Keynote, and Google Slides presentations
- 06Store as a universally readable archive
Your Footage Stays on Your Device
Drone and action-camera footage often covers travel locations, property, or personal moments you wouldn't want passing through a third-party server. Handytool's HEVC to MP4 converter runs entirely in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. There is no network request for your video file — conversion is a local CPU operation, and the output is written directly to your download folder.
No account, no sign-up, and no watermark. Once the page has loaded you can even turn off your internet connection and the tool continues to work.
HEVC to MP4 FAQ
How do I convert HEVC to MP4 online for free?
Drop your HEVC file onto the converter, adjust quality if needed, click Convert, and download the MP4. No sign-up or software install required.
Why won't my HEVC video play on Windows?
Windows requires a paid HEVC Video Extensions add-on from the Microsoft Store to decode H.265. Converting to H.264 MP4 fixes playback on any Windows machine without any codec install.
My iPhone video is a .mov file — is it HEVC?
Almost certainly yes. iPhones have recorded in HEVC by default since iOS 11. The .mov extension is just the container — the codec inside is H.265. This converter handles that correctly.
Will I lose quality when converting HEVC to MP4?
Some, since H.265 is re-encoded as H.264. At a quality setting of 80 or above the difference is barely perceptible. The MP4 will typically be larger than the source because H.264 compresses less efficiently than H.265.
Can I upload the converted MP4 to YouTube or Instagram?
Yes. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the recommended upload format for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, and Facebook.
Is my video uploaded to a server during conversion?
No. The converter runs entirely in your browser using FFmpeg WebAssembly. Your video never leaves your device and nothing is stored or logged.
